How to Care

  • Helichrysum (Strawflower) can be grown easily from seeds. They can be comfortably grown in mid-size grow bags like the HDPE 18x18 bags
  • The best time to sow is March when the average temperature is 20-25 degrees celsius. To sow indoors, the best time in February. The seeds should be positioned ¼ inches to ⅛ inches below the topsoil level
  • The flowers bloom by mid-summer (June-September) and will continue until the temperature is cold. The plant adapts well in average soils. It will take 8-10 days to germinate
  • After germination they should be positioned where they could obtain 4-5 hours of sun daily. The plant can tolerate shade but will not grow/ bloom in cooler temperatures/ full shade.
  • The plants cannot bear overwatering, thus watering should be kept at a check. Though the plants adapt well in poor soil and are drought tolerant, they could bloom only with proper watering.
  • Like any other flowering plant, Strawflowers are subjected to pest attacks. The pests can be controlled by watering the leaves with a watering wand and by applying pesticides at regular intervals.
