Billbergia nutans, also called the Friendship Plant, is native to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina but thrives exceptionally well in Indian conditions. Whether you place it in your living room, balcony, or garden, its graceful arching foliage and striking floral display will add a touch of elegance to your space.
Prefers bright indirect sunlight. Keep it in partial shade outdoors or near a sunny window indoors. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which may scorch the leaves. It needs 3-4 hours of indirect sunlight.
Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a blend of cocopeat, perlite, orchid bark, and sand.
Thrives in warm temperatures between 18°C – 35°C. Protect from extreme cold below 15°C. Moderate humidity encourages better growth and flowering.
Feed with an organic fertiliser like vermicompost, liquid seaweed concentrate or fish amino acid once a month during the growing season.
Perfect for indoor settings; use a shallow, wide pot with drainage holes. Suitable for 12 inches pot.
Show off its cascading leaves and flowers in hanging planters.
Mimic its natural habitat by attaching it to tree bark.
Ideal for tropical or subtropical gardens with good drainage.
Overwatering – Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Lack of sunlight, lack of nutrients – Move to a brighter location with indirect light and feed bone meal.
Queen's Tears plants are susceptible to mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites, which can cause yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and webbing.
Use Neem Oil Spray as an organic pest repellent. Mix a few drops with water and a bit of dish soap in a spray bottle, then mist your plant thoroughly.
Mix a teaspoon of dish soap with a litre of water. Spray this mixture on the affected areas, making sure to cover the undersides of leaves where aphids like to hide.
Use these solutions once in 4 days in the evening till the infestation stops.
